Sports and Physical Education
Sport is an integral part of school life at Beaulieu and we pride ourselves on producing enthusiastic, competitive, yet sporting team players who appreciate the importance of taking part, not just winning.
All our students are welcome to try their hand at a range of sports, whatever their level of ability, in an atmosphere of support and camaraderie.
We passionately support the notion of offering every pupil the opportunity to shine in their chosen area of interest. We believe taking part in sport and physical activity not only fosters an appreciation of the importance of team work, it also builds confidence, communication skills and a passion for life. Above all else, we want our students to enjoy sport here at Beaulieu.
Our PE Department is run by Head of PE, Heidi Fitzmaurice, a specialist PE teacher and is supported by Claire Watling, who runs PE for our Primary Department, and four other highly qualified colleagues providing our 3 to 19 sports provision.
At Beaulieu we pride ourselves on both our expert coaching and also our facilities. Our campus houses numerous tennis courts, an astro-turf, a Primary and Secondary gymnasium and ample outdoor space. We have ambitious plans to add to our sporting facilities over the next few years to further enhance both our sporting performance and our students' enjoyment of the outdoor life.
Sport is introduced to our students at an early age and our Primary students try out for a variety of teams including netball, football, tag rugby, cross country and athletics. We regularly compete against other schools in these sports and a number of our students go on to represent their Island.
In addition to our highly sought after school teams, we also offer 'Wednesday Clubs' on an inclusive basis. Every child is welcome to come along and take part in a range of activities including dance, musical theatre, netball, cricket, football, tag rugby and athletics during these sessions.
Our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 sports days are always a big success and a chance for our students to showcase their skills, support their House and have fun!
Our enthusiasm for sport continues into our Secondary Department, where our students have the opportunity to represent the School against other Island schools in local leagues and tournaments, in netball, hockey, tennis, athletics, football and rounders.
Competition for spaces in our school teams is fierce but all students are invited to attend the sessions, providing an inclusive environment and the opportunity to develop, improve and progress.
All Key Stage 3 students have two PE lessons a week and cover a broad range of sports and activities including: gymnastics, dance, fitness, cross-country, netball, football, hockey, athletics, rounders, cricket and tennis.
Students in Key Stage 4 participate in trampolining, first aid, life saving, golf, racquetball, tennis, cricket, boxercise, spinning, gym, zumba, pilates and yoga. Key Stage 4 pupils also have the opportunity to study Physical Education at GCSE and A Level, as well as a chance to gain additional qualifications such as Sports Leaders Awards, Netball Leaders Award, First Aid Certificate and Rookie Life Saving Award.
We take a practical view of fitness and strive to meet the demands of our students in the hope that we will instil positive lifestyle habits and sports interests that will continue long after they leave Beaulieu.
We hold a range of sporting events during the year including our Inter-house sports competitions which include netball, swimming gala, cross-country, rounders, and our Sports Day, which continues to be a tremendous success. Years 7 to 10 take part and Year 12 students assist with the planning and cheer on their House. The day is not just about winning, it's also about taking part and our students enjoy it enormously.
We enjoy regular success with our netball, hockey and football teams, both locally and against Guernsey and visiting UK teams. Our football teams, in particular have been hugely successful, with a recent Year 7 team reaching the position of 7th in the UK for 5 a side indoor football and our under-13 11 a side team reaching round 5 of a national tournament, placing them in the top 50 nationwide.
We also enjoy a huge amount of success in the areas of athletics, tennis and swimming.
